The Flock

To commemorate the refurbishment of Exeter Cathedral Green The Devon Learning and Development Partnership (LDP) and Exeter Cathedral organised an inspirational project for Devon primary and secondary students entitled ‘The Flock’.

‘The Flock’ was a visual art and design project for schools which involved children and school communities painting life-sized fibre glass sheep inspired by art and artists from this and other times and places. Sadie had previously created a papier mache flock at Loddiswell School based on Anthony Gormley’s ‘Field’ and the idea for ‘The Flock’ came from this and high profile exhibitions such as the cows in London and pigs in Bath. The painting was undertaken by children and young people from the age of 5 to 16 from Devon schools.

In total there were 156 life-sized sheep and lambs in ‘The Flock’ “installation” which took place on the Cathedral Green in May 2011. Gradually between 7am and 12 noon on Friday 13th May sheep and lambs arrived to graze on the green until there was a spectacular flock of beautifully painted animals. Hundreds of visitors came to admire the huge installation and it was a credit to the organisers, Phil Creek (Devon Art Adviser) and Sadie Medway (Devon Consultant for Art and Talent) and especially all the talented teachers and pupils involved in the painting of the sheep back in their own schools.
